We emphasize a social model in addition to the medical model. Residents of Big Meadows enjoy the beautiful aviary in our lobby, or may choose to have birds in their rooms. We also have live-in cats and dogs. Residents participate in exercising, grooming and feeding the pets and caring for the plants both inside and in our gardens outdoors. Children frequent our outdoor playground and indoor "Kids Corner", which includes books and games to share with elderly loved ones.
Culture change is a national movement to promote a new way of living and working in nursing homes. It is about individualizing care and adopting person-directed practices to improve the quality of care and quality of life for nursing home residents and the quality of work experience for staff.
Culture change is not a singular item. It involves changes in organizational practices, physical environments, relationships at all levels and workforce models. Culture change is a journey, with people working together to create an environment that improves quality of life for our residents.
Recreational Therapy
Recreational Therapy at Big Meadows promotes culture change by emphasizing social interaction. A wide variety of recreational opportunities are provided daily, including evenings, weekends and holidays. Community outings to parks, restaurants, shops and shows are an important part of our recreational therapy program.
